Schiavetto Restauri Lignei restores polychrome and gilded objects with a structure made up of a complex succession of layers: wooden support, plaster preparation, gilding and/or pictorial decoration. Once the layers of the object have been accurately determined, the conservative restoration work undertaken seeks to identify the various stages of gilding and/or repainting that have formed the layers over time, thus impeding proper interpretation. In this regard, our aim is to use appropriate techniques to recover the original gilded or polychrome surface.
There are several gilding methods that can be applied to wood:
-Gold leaf gilding is a procedure that consists of applying the gold leaf to the appropriately treated surface. This procedure has remained unchanged throughout
the centuries (the sole contribution made by modern technology regards the laminating of the gold, which is no longer carried out by hand by the "battiloro", or
gold leaf craftsman, but obtained industrially).
- Gold powder gilding, which is technically identical to gold leaf gilding, but uses gold powder instead of gold leaf.
